Quotation One

Is it possible to succeed without any act of betrayal?
- Jean Renoir

This quote says that in order to achieve great success, you must betray others to help yourself. This quote is almost in favor of betrayal. Although not directly saying that betrayal is a good thing, it does say that betrayal is a necessary part of getting ahead in life. This quote appears to take the side of the betrayer. It seems to show someone rationalizing betrayal to themselves by convincing themselves that it is the only way to succeed.

The author of this quote is an incredibly successful French film director. Because he has created so many films, he would be familiar with many different types of characters in all kinds of situations. It would be safe to assume that in at least a couple of these movies, the story would contain acts of betrayal. These experiences give Jean Renoir the right to speak about betrayal. I chose this quote because it reflects one of the sides of my concept, the betrayer...
