Anyone who says they have only one life to live must not know how to read a book. ~Author Unknown
Conclusion
...Betrayal is a nasty part of our human nature brought on by greed or self preservation. The one doing the betraying is generally aware that what they are doing is wrong or will hurt someone else, but feels that the benifits outweigh the damages. This can be seen in the book Divergent, and in my flash fiction. The characters in both those sources also feel at least a small amount of regret for their actions. On the other hand, the victims of betrayal seem to have come to a general feeling the what was done to them was unfair. (There is nothing worse than getting back stabbed by a enemy spy when you're on a killing spree.) The song written by Billy Joel was the only source of the betrayed showing forgiveness, or at least that he is moving on with his life. Humans without betrayal could simply not exist because using others to pull ourselves up, or to get ahead in the world, is part of our basic instinct.
